【Brief Overview】
Place matters to contemporary life in myriad ways, with technological and cultural trends creating new kinds of places, and connecting distant locales in unprecedented ways. Place has become more than a location, an address, a setting for action. It has also taken on the function of a brand. A range of examples could include geographical indications such as Scotch whisky, Parmesan cheese, and Darjeeling tea; nation branding efforts like Cool Japan and 100% Pure New Zealand; and the associations between specific places and certain characteristics, as with Paris and fashion, elegance, and cultural sophistication. The focus of this talk is place branding as it relates to Kyoto Prefecture’s food and agricultural industry. This talk draws on more than 18 months of ethnographic fieldwork inside and outside of Kyoto Prefecture. Using examples including Kyoto vegetables, Uji tea, Kyo-kaiseki, and Kyoto-style ramen, it will draw distinctions between different kinds of place brands and discuss the implications of place branding dynamics for contemporary locales. It will also address the Japanese context more generally, particularly in the post-3/11 historical context.
