【Brief Overview】
Identifying the financial impacts of contractual alliances has been elusive given the lack of available performance information. Using a detailed data set that includes alliance expenditures, this study examines the financial benefits to focal firms of brand and management contractual alliances. The study also identifies economic conditions that influence the extent of financial benefits focal firms realize from these alliances. The results indicate that on average focal firms benefit financially from these contractual alliances. Importantly, the net financial benefits realized by focal firms decrease with the span of the supplier and increase with the amount of business complexity faced by the focal firm and with the degree of market segment competition among suppliers.
