【Brief Overview】

Sustainability is now undeniably one of the key principles in tourism development, an awareness reinforced by the SDGs, decarbonisation and the importance of peace in the recent global climate. Now, as the world is returning to ‘normal’ and the recovery of tourism is being driven by the public and private sectors, we need to once again take a fresh look at what sustainability in/by/for tourism means. This means making better use of the variety of opportunities to develop sustainability products and to make personal and material investiment, so that sustainability can lead us in the right direction, rather than the under-managed tourism we have experienced before, and so that sustainability is not misused as a token label.

We believe it would be useful to focus on ‘destination wellbeing’ (betterment of the local economy, society and environment) based on the idea of ‘regenerative tourism’ as a holistic sustainability concept that gives more focus on destinations, and to examine how to define and use the concept (destination wellbeing) in destination management. Global experts will be invited to engage in this critical discussion.
