Ports and harbors are the lifeline of the Japanese economy, as they carry 99.5% of the trade volume in Japan, which has scarce natural resources. Some important measures have been implemented; The "International Container and Bulk Hub Policy" to cope with the economic security that has emerged due to the COVID-19 and international conflicts, the "Next Generation High Standard Unit Load Terminal" and "Port DX with AI Terminal and Cyber Port" to overcome the so-called "2024 issue" or truck driver shortages, "Port GX with Carbon Neutral Port (CNP) Initiative" to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and "Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, and National Resilience" to cope with imminent and frequent large-scale natural disasters. This course will discuss the frontiers of port policy and how to respond to social issues through port administration.
