AY2023 GSM’s New Faculty Members: Associate Professor Keisuke KOKUBUN

Graduate School of Management, Kyoto University, welcomes new full-time faculty members this year.
We are delighted to introduce the unique members individually.

Keisuke Kokubun, Associate Professor

【Background before joining GSM】
After obtaining a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo, I worked as a senior researcher at International Economy and Work Research Institute, an assistant professor at Kyoto University, and a senior lecturer at Tohoku University, before joining GSM as an associate professor in 2023.

【Specialized field, research content】
I have two specialties. One is a field of brain science called neuroinformatics. I have researched to clarify the relationship between brain health quotients obtained by brain image analysis and psychological indices such as happiness and motivation obtained by questionnaire survey. The other is a field of management studies called human resource management. I have researched to clarify the ideal form of rewards for increasing employee organizational commitment and the differences by countries or cultures. Recently, I have conducted research that integrates both, for example, research to clarify the relationship between brain conditions and performance in the workplace.

However, I have not always been a researcher, and most of my career has been in the business world. I set up a small management consulting business and have flown overseas for a long time visiting thousands of local Japanese subsidiaries. I have conducted questionnaire surveys for employees working at Japanese affiliates, summarizing the results in reports, and proposing improvements to management. Moreover, I have set up a spin-out company, its subsidiaries, and its representative offices overseas, serving as a lecturer at seminars for local managers many times, and writing a column for business newspapers. Sometimes people compliment me on my research achievements, but most of my papers were written during the last five years when I was in an academic post. I am like a fish in water and enjoy doing research more than anyone else. When I was doing business, I was so busy that I didn’t have time for that.

【Message】
As you can see, my career has been split between business and research, so I feel that the GSM environment is a good fit for me. Currently, I am researching to clarify the secrets of maintaining cognitive function in the elderly, and research on how companies should manage employee stress during the COVID-19 crisis. In the future, I would like to cooperate with you all and strive to achieve great research results that will benefit the people of the world. Also, I would like to give good advice to those who want to become researchers by making use of my research expertise, and to those who want to pursue a career in business by making use of my business experience. Thank you very much.
